Comments: I certainly welcome a brand new year--2013.  Just maybe Yarmouth will be able to see news of a ferry pulling into port once more.  I am sure visitors to this site and to Yarmouth would welcome having one again!  Yarmouth is just as beautiful as the last time you came so please make plans to come back again.
You can still come and see this wonderful town--you just have to enjoy the long ride--but it is well worth it.  When do you plan your next trip to Yarmouth?

Comments: Greetings Wellington. While reading through the recent posts, I found one requesting old pictures of Wellington. Unfortunately, I don't have any of their house but I do have some of mine. I was born in Yarmouth and lived at what is now 1942 Evangaline Trail. I attended Wellington School which was directly across the road from the Wellington Hall. The school was one room and the teacher taught grades 1A through 9. I think it was 1955 when the school was closed and we were bussed to the new consolidated school in Hebron. On Sundays we would attend church services at the "Hall", which were conducted by Rev. O'Grady from Hebron. At Christmas time there would be a Christmas party at the Hall and us kids had to do recitations which I hated. It was fun though and of course all the mothers brought cookies & candies to hand out.I have sent some old pictures to the Webmaster to put on the Wellington site. Wish I had more. Pierce's mill was down the hill from my house and it provided us kids with endless opportunites to get into mischief. The Millpond was a place to sail out homemade rafts and the stream leading from the mill had some of the best trout holes in the area. Fond memories of a bygone era.

Comments: I have fond memories of Carleton, having grown up there; attended elementary school, played sports, hunted, boated on Lake Fannie and oh yes, worked at Millers Lumber yard and the berry box factory located near the Carleton bridge, picked berries and apples.  Carleton is a beautiful place with a long history of settlers and some business ventures.  Many of my relatives who now live there keep the true spirit of Carleton alive!

Name: Jay Gaudette
Location: United States
E-Mail: jaygtt@gmail.com

Comments: Hello my name is Jay Gaudette and I'm attempting to do family history.
I'm having a problem identifying who my 1st Great Grandmother is.

She was married to Timothy Olivier Gaudette (has various spellings) born 13 Feb 1856 in Melbourne, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. Just about everything I see shows Vénérante Comeau as being his wife.

My difficulty arises because I have a copy of my Grandfather Hebert Martin Gaudette Marriage Certificate showing his mother as Mary C. Comno.

I realize that the clerk at the City of Boston  probably misspelled “Comeau” as “Comno.”  But the “Mary C.” does not sound like “Vénérante.”

On the LDS Family Search site I find a reference to Mary Comeau being born on 8 July 1875 In Shaticamp, Digby, Nova Scotia, Canada to Marin Comeau and Natalie Theriau and there are other variations of spellings for the father, mother and daughter (the wife of Timothy Olivier Gaudette.)

Of course, his name has had various spelling also.  He was born Gaudet, while on at least two Canadian census it was spelled Godet and on the ship’s manifest to the United States at was spelled with my Gaudette spelling.

My questions sound simple, but I’m aware that they are not.
1.    Was Vénérante actually Marie Vénérante?
2.    If No: then who is Timothy’s wife, Mary (Marie) or Vénérante?
3.    If Mary: if Marin and Natalie are her parents, would you have any idea who then is beyond them? Dead ends are everywhere.
4.    If Vénérante: do you know which set of parents are hers?

I have been able to have 160 Comeau family members in my tree, but I find it so funny that the one most direct to me, is giving me the hardest time.

I respectfully request that if you know any or all of the answers to the above questions, would you be kind enough to provide me with the answers or some hints as to what direction I should take.
My g-mail address is jaygtt@gmail.com I will understand if you can’t provide the answers.
Thank for taking the time to read my note.
Regards,
Jay

Comments: South End of my youth full of optimism and vision

After a recent trip to Yarmouth I was thinking about growing up in the South End of the town between 1951-72. In fact I submitted a copy of this to the Vanguard. Yarmouth South was a magical place to grow up.  It is such a shame like places like the Temple Church and many of the large homes are in such disrepair in 2013. The new Mayor has a big job on her plate. But she seems to be up for the task. I wish her luck.

Even the seasons in that place bring back such vivid memories. The spring brought the smell of burning grass around Queen Street and the sight of kites flying over the golf links from my kitchen window. The long days of summer summoned hikes to Bunker Island & playing with the neighbour hood kids till dark. Fall would introduce the excitement of the first day of school and walks along William Street, windy nights and a magical Halloween. Finally winter would bring with it skating on Allan’s Pond and hockey behind Notre Dame church, Playground Christmas treats, McGuiness Family playing Christmas music from their house widow’s walk on bond Street. What are your memories of growing up in South end?

The biggest difference I can see between the Yarmouth South of my youth and today is exactly what was said in the editorial. That part of town is missing a strategic vision and a community anchor. Rumor has it the new council is going to review all of the former strategic plans already done for the town and blend them together into one for 2013. I think this is a good start.

In my time the vision came from my neighbors. They included Willard Allen, Harry and Sadie Goudey, Ernie and Myrtle Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. McDowell, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Rozee, Margaret Cann, Don and Myrtle Dunn, Emily and Gus Doucette, the Brush family, the Bishara and Crosby families and finally my own Mom and Dad, Earl and Marilyn. Their vision was simple, anything was possible in your life if you came from South end Yarmouth. These people all left unique imprints on my character that I was to draw on all during my life. There isn’t one of these individuals that I couldn’t tell you something amazing about. The community Anchor was Notre Dame church and Amirault’s store. One gave the residents purpose and the other gave them pride.

I know I would be considered an outsider now if I ever moved back to Yarmouth. It is one of my only life regrets that saw my career path take me away from my soul place. I laugh sometimes when I hear that other parts of Yarmouth think of South End as the poor part of town. This considering residents of HRM probably things the same provincially about Yarmouth in general. It is time to end this mind set about Yarmouth that there are rich and poor parts. Trust me, in life money is never the measuring stick used to determine character. And that is one thing Yarmouth South and its residents have always had in spades.

To conclude: I wish all the best to the people and council of the town. Hopefully by working together and embrassing change the town of Yarmouth can once again be a place of vision and hope.

Bent's family in Yarmouth. His parents were Elizabeth Power & Charles William Bent, who had a farm at Sand Point. Charles W. owned the Schooner: M. & L. CHASE. We have the YARMOUTH REMINISCENCES book that tells on page 410 about the Bent's farm fire. It would be wonderful if we could find photos of this family, their farm and/or his schooner. I've found the family on censuses & Chas. W. Bent's sailing certificate on Ancestry.com. Keep up the good work on this website.

Comments: Massive Mako Shark Caught off Yarmouth, Nova Scotia

This mako shark was hooked in the mouth off the coast of wave rich Nova Scotia, fought slightly for fifteen minutes, came up along side of the boat to have a look, which was just long enough for one of the crew to put a rope around it tail.

That’s when the shit really hit the fan.

The shark took off, towing the 42-foot fishing boat backwards through the water at about 7 knots-just like in the movie Jaws. The boat was taking on water and the shark would jump completely out of the water at times. This went on for an hour before the shark actually drowned.
The big guy weighed in at 1035lbs.

Comments: Well, Folks ... Mothers' Day is officially over for another year, but we all know that Mothers are precious every day of the year ... so, to all you Mothers out there ... Have a Happy everyday, you deserve it.
I posted this poem over facebook the other day, commemorating Mothers' Day, so I thought I'd share it with those of you tuned in to this site.
(If one were to listen to Loran Fevens' "Sentimental Journey" on Sunday evenings, one might just hear something I composed for whatever special occasion.)
I am back home for good, now, and I can't tell you how wonderful it is to be here. So, a little late, but here's to all the fantastic people out there who are lovingly called, "Mother" ... or "Mom".
Mom And Dad

E.W. Smith

'Wasn't much more of a kid, myself
When Junior came along.
That's when I first learned to change a diaper ...
And, yes ... I got it wrong.
We would wheel that child all over town
In that old carriage Mary had.
How proud we felt when that child learned to say;
I wuv you, Mom and Dad.

Time sure flies ... I'm tellin' ya.
The kid was turning five.
We registered our son in the neighbourhood school
And, we watched the young fella strive.
He got on well with the kids his age
And, was soon a Grade School Grad.
When he walked on stage, he mouthed us these words;
I Love you, Mom and Dad.

Those teenage years sure are tough.
They certainly were for me.
So, at times when he tripped on some mental bump,
We just let bygones be.
He would play his summer baseball games
And would try each new passing fad.
And ... our eyes would shine each time he'd say;
I Love you, Mom and Dad.

Yeah ... time sure passes quickly.
he started dating Julie-Anne.
And, before we knew what was happening,
They had their wedding planned.
We were slow to offer our blessings,
Tho ... deep down inside, we were glad.
When we did, he smiled with those six precious words;
I Love you, Mom and Dad.

The big day came and the church was full.
'Came the groom and the stunning bride.
I was so overwhelmed with so many thoughts ...
And, yes.  I'll admit it. ... I cried.
Then came the big reception.
We were as happy as heck ... yet, so sad.
How we smiled when they uttered those six little words;
We Love you, Mom and Dad.

Mary and I are grandparents, now.
And, those kids are nearly all grown.
We have this old house all to ourselves
But, seldom are we all alone.
The kids would come by and we'd laugh and we'd cry
At the up-to-date news that they had.
When leaving, they'd whisper those heart-warming words;
We Love you, Mom and Dad.

Well ... time gets the better of all of us.
And, Mary and I got ... the call.
No sadness required. We've had a good life
And we seem to be loved by all.
Each week our kids would drive out to our home
To talk of the week they just had.
Then, those beautiful words, they leave on our tomb ...
We Love you, Mom and Dad.

Comments:  My very first trip to Yarmouth was in 1930. And since then all i have always said,it is the last place God built on this earth. I few years back we were there for the the reunion of Arcadiens. And the LeBlanc clan registered at St Annes @ Church Point. There were 4000 of us LeBlanc's from all corners of the states. That couple of weeks was a party second to none. To go back a litle in time i have been to Pinkney's Point at least 60 times in my 84 years. But it was always Grand Ma's, later ny parents who went back to retire from New York, and then Cousins i would visit. But then i decided on one visit to see Nova Scotia and we took a 10 day trip up the south shore across and down the north shore, staying in B & B's. The History that Lonfellow wrote in his book Evengline is a drop in the bucket to what we learned. The melting pop Of French, Scot's, Germans, and yes the brutal English. I say that it's they at one point in time took over the area from those who worked so hard to set up. They took all the Arcadiens and set them out on boats seperating men women and children. Explaing why you have French Canadians up and down the whole eastern seaboard ending in New Orleans. After some years later the Arcadiens, did regain some of there loses. So here iam born in Brooklyn N.Y. with 4000  + cousins all descended from one Family LeBlanc who came to Nova Scotia   And when you add, the Surette's, Saulniers, Potiers. Boudreau's Belliveau's and many others explains why i say it was the last place God built on this Planet  My tip of the day take a B & B trip around Nova Scotia
Note Daniel LeBlanc  born 1626 in France came to Nova Scotia and married Francoise Godet in 1650 in Port Royal and had several sons to start the Clan LeBlanc

I am trying to find a Warren Surette who is originally from Malden, Massachusetts and part of the 1964 graduating class (making him 65 to 68 years of age).
I have worked on our class reunions over the last 20 years.  We have a 50th reunion coming up in April of 2014 and another classmate of ours was recently visiting Nova Scotia and ran into Warren, who now lives on Surette’s Island (and I believe has for quite some time).
I am hoping you might have an address, phone or email for Warren, as he has, up to now, been on a “Missing List” for our class!
Warren did tell the other classmate that it is too far to travel for the reunion for him, but I thought perhaps he might enjoy an occasional class email and a reconnection with the class.
Any information you might have is appreciated, thank you.

My grandmother, Margaret Hilton Kelly, was born in Carleton.  Along with her mother, Elizabeth, father, John, and  3 brothers and 2 sisters they moved to California in 1872. Margaret's  aunt Thirsa, who lived in Carleton, came to visit us in Merced, California in the 1930s.
I traveled with my grandmother, and my mother, Anne Elizabeth McHenry, to Yarmouth by over night boat from Boston in 1951. Mary Wyman, a Carleton teacher and cousin  met us in Yarmouth and drove us to Carleton where we stayed several nights, meeting family members and visiting family grave sites.
I plan to come back to Carleton sometime in the near future to visit existing relatives, family grave sites and do family research.
I  believe Hilton Kelly was either my great grandfather's brother or cousin. Do you have any information about Hilton Kelly?  His name is a prominente part of my grandmother's name.
With very kind regards,

Although Beyond Acadia reads as a memoir, fiction interweaves Joseph Guillaume’s thoughts, fears, aspirations, interpretations, moods, and perceptions. Historical events’ times and settings are very close, if not exact, to actual happenings. Real and imaginary places, fabricated and altered names, invented characters and those based on the living or dead stream the passages and embellish the stories. Bill Boudreau’s novel, Redemption Island, makes many references to sequences and narratives in this book.
Thank you Godfrey.

Comments: To the finest town in North America ... my home town:
Come Down To Nova Scotia (And Visit Yarmouth Town)  E.W. Smith

Come on down to Nova Scotia
And, hear the gentle sigh
Of an ocean rubbing up against
A diamond 'neath the sky
And, when you get to driving,
Take the time to look around ...
And, spend a precious day or two
Down in Yarmouth town.

Go to Freddy Emin's Butcher Shop;
Better service you won't find ...
And, the clams at Mern's are wonderful things
To curb one's appetite.
Take a comfy room at The Grand Hotel
'Cross the way from old Frost Park ...
Then, sit and watch the harbor lights
When the skies above are dark.

There's the Red and White down on Argyle
Just on the corner of Main ...
And, the prices here are not so dear
To cause your wallet pain.
The Dinner Plate up Milton 'way
Stands out ... and, I'll tell you why ...
There is no finer place to go
For down home rappie pie.

When the skies are blue over Cape Forchu
And, the ocean is serene ...
When the winds are calm and the clouds are few
It's such a peaceful scene.
The tides do ebb and the tides do neap
All along my old  home shore ...
They're the welcome mat, so please come back
To visit us once more.

Comments: This coming year will be a great one for Yarmouth.  For those visiting this page and haven't heard---Yarmouth is getting a ferry for 2014!  It will start in May and run through October.
If you thought about visiting Nova Scotia, coming home to Yarmouth for just visiting a piece of heaven--this year you can!  The welcome mat is out and there is so much to see and do.  The ferry is the Nova Star and you can check it out on line.
Families can be reunited and new friends will be made for sure.
I am so glad this page is a part of Yarmouth's future!
