Comments: My son & I returned from a trip to Yarmouth where I met a woman whom I've never met & whom I haven't heard from up until November, 2002. It all began in July, 1970 when my father, mother and I took a N.Y. Daily News boat trip to pick up newsprint. We departed from New York City going to Bay Comeau, Canada & the trip took 3 days for us to get there. Prior to leaving, I typted out 3 letters, all identical, with my name, address, where we departed from, where we were going, numbered each letter 1, 2, & 3 asking that if anyone found that bottle (with my note inside) to please contact me. I threw one bottle out into the Atlantic each day.
In October, 1970 I received a letter back from an 11-year-old girl in Nova Scotia stating that she found my #2 bottle while digging for clams (I was 15-years-old). Edith LeBlanc (her childhood name) and I wrote back & forth for 3 years as penpals until I graduated from high school. I went on to college & Edith and I lost contact with each other.
I work in a hospital & have told nurses this story. Several thought that because of the Internet, I should be able to locate Edith. However, being 30 years later, I dismissed it saying that she was probably married, had a different last name, & I would have no idea how to start looking for her. However, one Saturday while "surfing the net", I came across a banner ad that read, "CANADA 411--FIND ANYBODY YOU'RE LOOKING FOR." Curious about what it was, I clicked on it and it asked for the person's first & last name as well as what town or province they were from. I remembered Edith's old mailing address so I typted in her last name only as well as what I thought was her town (Digby). When I entered it, I got 30 LeBlancs in the Digby area. I wondered if I should continue but decided I've gone this far so see what I could find. I picked up my telephone in Minneapolis & started to call the LeBlancs in the Digby area (if any of you should read this it was me who called you). The first 10 LeBlancs didn't know Edith & weren't related to her but everybody seemed fascinated by the bottle story. On the 11th call, I spoke to a Linda LeBlanc, (still no relation), but she asked me if I remembered Edith's mailing address. When I read her Edith's old mailing address, she told me that she didn't live in Digby but in Weymouth. I went back to CANADA 411, plugged in Weymouth, & only got a total of 10 LeBlancs. On the third try, I spoke to Edith's sister. I asked if she felt comfortable enough giving out Edith's phone # but she told me to call HER back in 45 minutes and if Edith wanted to talk to me, then she's give me her phone number (SMART MOVE BY HER LADIES!).
My son & I took the Scotia Prince over to Nova Scotia and for the first time in my life, I met Edith! I'm now 48 & Edith is 44. But in addition to this, Linda LeBlanc who told me I was calling the wrong area picked us up at the boat & we've become casual friends. Edith Amirault (married name) & her brother own and run "Natures Prime Fruits & Vegetables" in Yarmouth. If you're ever in the area, stop and tell Edith you heard about the "bottle story." Cheers, Eric Umstead

Just downloaded the picture of the lighthouse for my wallpaper. It will be nice to turn on my computer and see a picture of Yarmouth although it will make me homesick.

My compliments on such a nice site.

Seeing that Cooks Dairy advetisement has my mouth watering for a glass of their chocolate milk.

Always a Yarmouthian

Comments: My fantasy would be to retire and move to Argyle, the roots of my paternal ancestors.  I am the great-grandaughter of Elizabeth Hamilton, and the granddaughter of Myron and Lilah Lennox, daughter of Charles Myron Lennox.  I have been traveling to Yarmouth and Argyle since I was a small child and I love it.  Still have extended family there and visit occassionally.  I love the simpler lifestyle and the scenery is undescribable. Lighthouses are my passion.

Comments: Both my wife and I enjoy Yarmouth very much.  We attempt to two trips per year,  onece in June and another in August.  Take the "Cat" from Bar Harbor Maine on friday mornings, leave Yarmouth on sunday afternoons.  Gives us a chance to get away for the weekend, "Veg out" as my wife likes to call it, enjoy Yarmouth and it's people.  Stay at the Rodd Colony Motel just a hop, skip and jump away from the ferry terminal.  Wife enjoys the shops on Main Street, also enjoy the local musuems, just an outstanding place to kick back and relax!!!!

Comments: Three years ago my husband and I took the CAT over to Yarmouth for a vacation.  On the day we were to leave to come home, my husband had a heart attack.  He suffered very little damage to his heart and was feeling well, but had to stay in the hospital for one week in Yarmouth.  I stayed in our hotel.  I had plenty of time to explore the Yarmouth area and found it beautiful. I felt that I was in another world, calmer and more down to earth than where I live.  I loved it. I found the people very friendly and helpful to me.  One experience I will never forget is a day I spent alone at Cape Forchu.  I took many pictures of the lighthouse and the rocks (the lighthouse was under construction).  The area was very calming and "therapeutic" as I was worried about my husband and a little lonely staying in a hotel.  When we arrived home I couldn't wait to get my black and white film developed.  I was upset when the processor ruined the film and I had no pictures to remind me of this special place.  I know that someday we will come back, but I would like to find a reminder such as a model lighthouse, some pictures, etc.  If you could e-mail me with a site that I could order something, or an address of the lighthouse gift shop I would appreciate it.
The e-mail address I gave above is new and if it does not connect to me I can be reached at work at dsloane@ywcarochester.org.
Thank you so much.
Dorothy M. Sloane
