Comments: Re:  My dad (the late Dr. Judson Stewart MacGregor of Nova Scotia, Boston & Milton, Massachusetts)'s first cousin, Gordon Sullivan Hatfield, son of Dad's "Aunt Fan", or Frances nee Hatfield, 2nd wife of John Ashley Hatfield.  Gordon was born 9 Oct. 1871 in Tusket Falls, Yarmouth County, NS, brother of "Chrissie" Hatfield, telephone exchange operator 1940's to early 1960's in Tusket.  I would like to correspond (my email is Rjmsimon@knology.net) with friends and relatives of Chrissie and Gordon Hatfield.  I can explain that I heard that Gordon's mother never wanted him to be a photographer. Possibly Gordon's wife, nee Nettie Gavel, didn't want him to either?  Does anyone have a copy of the photo mentioned below from your website, a photo which Gordon took?  This photo doesn't show on my computer screen.  I do know that Gordon took the photo of my family, headed by my grandfather, Rev. Peter Stewart MacGregor a former minister of Baptist Church probably in Tusket, his wife - my grandmother, Bessie Hatfield, nee Elizabeth Maria Hatfield daughter of Jacob Hatfield and Eleanor Jane MacKinnon of Tusket, of my father Judson, & his siblings Charles Harold MacGregor, Jean Hatfield MacGregor, and George Everett MacGregor, ca. 1900.  I am hoping that the photo referred to on your website might be my family, but I'd have to see the photo to identify it.  If anyone has a photo of Jacob Hatfield who died ca. 1861, when my grandmother was age 2, I'd love to see that as well!

Here's the text from your website mentioning Gordon Sullivan Hatfield, whom I've met, I think, when I was a little child in the 1940's, if the page will permit me to copy and paste it here:

"A Notable Native of Tusket Falls
Gordon Sullivan Hatfield was born in Tusket Falls in 1871.  He was a professional photographer early in his career and managed to combine photography with farming.   He owned a considerable amount of land in the area and was successful as a commercial grower of strawberries and blueberries.  He owned real estate on Yarmouth's Main Street and maintained other business interests in the town.  His photography business operated from 1900 to about 1915 and, by 1903, he ran a full studio across from his house in the village of Tusket.  An added attraction on this site was an ice cream parlour run by Mrs. Chase Hatfield.

At the time of his marriage, he abandoned his photography, not only as a  business, but even as a hobby.  It's not clear why this happened, because the photographs which still exist are exemplary.  The family portrait by Hatfield,  reproduced below, elegant, dignified,  and yet simple, is the work of a true artist.  The subjects are unidentified and one can only imagine why they came to Hatfield's studio, solemn, distinguished, certainly affluent, to make this family record..  Are they Yarmouthians?  Does anyone recognize them from family photos?  It would be interesting to learn their identity.

Gordon Hatfield died in 1944 at the age of seventy-three.   Cause of his death: a heart attack brought on while cranking his Model-T truck.

More information to be added

The photo and account of Gordon Hatfield's career are taken from the book by Eric Ruff and Laura Bradley, ‘Images of our Past - Historic Yarmouth - Town & County'.   Our thanks to the authors and to the the Yarmouth County Museum and Archives, 22 Collins St., Yarmouth, Nova Scotia B5A 3C8, Canada;   (902)742-5539; ycmuseum@ns.sympatico.ca .  The website address is http://yarmouthcountymuseum.ednet.ns.ca/"

I'd love to hear from you all.  Please write!

Am trying to find information on our maternal grandfather, George T. Walter of Antiqua, British West Indies, who served as a crew member on, I believe, the Yarmouth Castle.

He was one of the survivors.

Thanks.

Comments: Hi,Just got my computer and am trying to do a little family research....... there sure is a lot of information out there, it's mind-boggling.  My dad spent all his summers growing up on Roberts Island, Glenwood, Yarmouth County.  I didn't get up there until after he died, we brought his ashes back to Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, in 1994.His name was Arthur Wallace Whitehouse---I would love to hear from anyone who remembers him, or from other family members.  I have been trying to trace our earliest ancestor, William Whitehouse.,born in 1778-1780....was an orphan, adopted by a family of Jeremiah Frost.  I don't have much information, but he settled on Roberts Island and I'm descended from his son, Benjamin Joseph Whitehouse, and Elihu Ritchie Whitehouse, his grandson---whose house still stands on Roberts Island.  I am related to Rickers, Frosts, Roberts, Crowell (?), Spinney, Nickersons, and others.  I would love to go back and spend a few weeks at least, in Nova Scotia.......hoping for a trip next summer.  Would like to meet any relatives interested, or maybe attend any family reunions....Please email me.  Thank you for any help or information !  Jan
