Hectanooga Lake:   Frustration from Hectanooga, 2013

Subject: Fwd: The best and worst of nature.
Well another week has past and guess what, the sea gulls are still here in Hectanooga Lake. The only creatures that appear to have disappeared is the entire staff of the Agriculture Department. Haven't heard a word from anyone in charge. Whether there are any animals still alive in the Hectanooga Mink Farm is known to the owners and manager alone. Rest assured, what I know for certain is the sea gulls wouldn't be here unless there is a source of food. On another note, My neighbour is having difficulty with flooding of his land due to an inadequate pipe that goes under the CLARE ATV TRAIL. The project has been shut down a month or so ago by the Environment/Lands and Forest for a review and nothing has been done to date. This is not a major project but the fact nothing is being done make one wonder if it is a make work project. The ATV users must drive around the unfinished project by using a public road. This becomes a safety issue for them and others, not to mention a law infraction that Government staff deem unimportant.
I'm not asking a lot, all I want is to see the sea gulls retreat to their NATURAL environment. I'm trying hard to live in harmony with the mink farm but sadly, these farmers aren't interested and neither is the Agriculture staff. My patience is being severely tested and there are limits one can endue. Please take an interest in my desire to return my home environment to the sounds of song birds and not the squawking of sea gulls

Sincerely, Paul Mazier.

Jeff; On Friday evening I observed two families of Canada Geese in the lake in front of our home. The families consist of four adults and nine young ones. The parents were teaching the young how to fly and the young would mimic their flapping wings. They also "duck-dive" exposing their white belles. Quite a pleasant sight. On the flip side, seagulls who have no natural right to be in the lake have been in and out of the area for some time now. Why don't they concentrate in their own environmental habitant, that is the ocean? It's because they are continually frequenting the mink farm in Hectanooga where there is an ample food supply. The intent of your Regulations suggests that nuisances such as odours, flies etc. are to be minimized in order to, I presume, be less annoying to their neighbours. I believe this also includes seagulls simply because they can be an annoyance when outside their natural environment and encroach on another. Waking up to squawking seagulls is not natural for me as I'm used to waking to melodious song birds.
While I understand on-site composting is permissible, the word does not, by any stretch of imagination, suggest mixing food waste with manure and a few wood chips is composting. Its more of a science than that and I'm convinced the management and staff of this mink farm have no idea what it entails. Therefore, I suggest that armed with the new Regulations, the Agriculture Department do its duty and have this business of food waste and manure rectified.

Paul Mazier.
