Nowlans
Lake, green since at least 1983
From: John Horton <halleyhort@hotmail.com> Subject: Nowlans Lake , green and sick... august 2011 Wed, 24 Aug 2011 This aerial photo,
taken
from higher altitude pointing south over the 340 highway,
gives an
excellent view of the headwaters area of three
distinct
watersheds: The Tusket, Meteghan and Sissiboo rivers.
Nowlans' unusualal year round yellow-green color is the result of dense waterplant growth mixed with cyanobacteria. Shallow calm waters combined with sunshine, warm temperatures and massive nutrient -overloading have created this permanently tangled mess of organic growth at the top of the Meteghan River chain. The picture shows at least a dozen large sources of nutrient pollution running into the three watersheds: an aquaculture operation on Hourglass lake, a feed 'Kitchen' on Nowlans , and mink farms along highway 340. ...thanks to Allister d"Entrement for forwarding this shot...(Aug 2011) Nowlans Lake 2009
